7/24/2023 0 Comments Unplugged bar gdl![]() Ana took photo's of our facial expressions after we tried the drink for the first time. Then we had each try the local speciality of Mate drunk from a communal vessle with a special straw. We had coffee, cake and delicious home made ice cream. Robinson was a stray that had been found on an uninhabited island and he was most excited. Then on we sailed with a brief land stop and about a further 1 1/2 hours back to a raptuous greeting by the dogs when we returned. The trimings were magnificent and included empanadas (meat pies) and this was washed down with plenty of beer or wine. Ralph again excelled in cooking delicious chicken and sirloin steak on a gas barbeque on the boat. After about an hour and a half's sailing, we moored where we could throw bread to the fish and had a most scrumtious lunch- all served on the boat. We sailed through a maze of channels- some wide with houses, some very narrow and we eventually crossed the main river and shipping lane where lots of large vessels were taking mainly grain. It was quite a cold day and some of us were unprepared, but Ana lent us fleeces and blankets so we were warm. He had certainly lost none of his skills, and we enjoyed a welcome breakfast of home made bread (baked in a clay oven), and two types of honey plus other preserves-absolutely divine - we could not stop eating. We soon learned that Ralph was an ex cargo ship cook. Also the extent of flooding and the need for the dwelling to be raised. We saw how water is purified, but drinking water must be brought in. It depends on the state of the river- which is tidal despite its distance from the sea. Island living is very different to normal. After about 3/4 hour, we were dropped at the island home of Ralph and Ana and we had a serious doggy welcome and warm greetings from the owners. This in itself was an experience as it involved many stops where goods or people were dropped and the excitement that the dogs showed at seeing their owners again was fascinating. A quick cup of coffee at the handy MacDonald's refreshed us and we caught the 9am bus boat. ![]() It took about an hour to Tigre and it was light when we arrived. It was a great experience to be travelling with the ordinary folk of Beunos Aires as they went to work. The return fare at 4 Peso's was almost too cheap. ![]() A taxi quickly took seven of us to Retiro station and, thanks to Ana's instructions, booking a ticket to Tigre was easy. We had a late night previously and it was a struggle to be ready in the hotel lobby by 6.45am. I definitely recommend “Delta Unplugged” everything about it was magical! When we docked at the house Ana produced amazing ginger ice cream before bringing us back to Tiger for our taxi home. My husband who hates fish could no get enough of Ralph’s catfish! After several glass of delicious wine I had a little snooze on the way back. Halfway along we pulled in under a weeping willow where Ralph proceeded to cook us an amazing lunch. Ana took fab photos which she later sent us. Both of them are so knowledgeable and bubbly about life on the river & had eyes that spotted all the lovely wild life. Off we went on their boat, lazily cruising & totally relaxing. Ralph served his homemade bread & honey with verbena tea delicious! Meanwhile Ana told us all about life on the the Delta & showed us on the map the route we went about to embark upon. We were picked up by Taxi & taken to the water taxi in Tiger which brought us to their home on the Delta. Our hosts Ana & Ralph made sure it was a memorable event. I, my husband & friend just spent a wonderful day on the Delta. Anna and ralph, tx a lot for this unforgettable day, we already miss you! (But we will keep contact via whatsapp □) I only can recommend to book this tour, you wont regret it! Last tip, book this trip during a weekday as in the weekend its crowded in tigre by local people who go there to enjoy the weekend in their holiday home. Also the wine we received during lunch was excellent. Ralph is and excellent chef and the food was so delicious. Around 5.30pm we were back at their house, enjoyed some more surprises, had a lot of great conversations and went back to the big city. Just take a cabify (40min) to tigre and this awesome adventure can start. It is such a peaceful environment and MUST do when you are staying at buenos aires. After lunch we went back to their house (another 1,5hour). ![]() After approx 2 hours we stopped for lunch in a magical place on the river and had a very tasty lunch (on the boat). Afterwards we left with the beautiful boat. We enjoyed the presence of the cats/dogs and a lot of kolibris who we could feed in their beautiful garden. After a short boat ride (15min) we arrived at their peaceful home. We were picked up at the pier at tigre at 10.30am. Anna and ralph are very kind and genuine people. Wooow, what a great once in a lifetime authentic experience we had.
